why a book

we could have made an app that locks your phone. we could have made a stand that flips it face-down. we could have made a timer, a case with a tally on the side, a guilt-shaped piece of hardware.

we made a book. specifically: a hardcover that opens like a book, holds your phone like a book, and from across the room is a book.

the reason is simple: the only viewer that matters is the kid.

an app fixes you. a timer punishes you. a face-down phone says “the phone is bad.” all of these make the phone the main character. the kid still sees a parent fighting with a device.

a book changes the main character. now what they see is a parent reading.

that flip — from “parent avoiding phone” to “parent reading book” — is the entire mechanism. the form is the function. there is no software to install. no streaks to keep. no settings panel to fail at.

you just hold a book.

and the kid, who has no idea any of this is engineered, picks one up too.
